Data Portability Woes

It is the best of Times, It is the worst of times. data portability

What Charles Dickens wrote in A tale of Two cities holds good for Enterprise applications today.

Innovations are the order of the day. There is a perfect application that fits in for every possible enterprise business need. It can be installed in jiffy and gets going from day one. But what about data? Who enters and updates the ever-changing dynamic data. The wonderful new app is a dud without updated data.

Data Portability Challenges

HR maintains employee data in SAP, IT maintains it in Active directory, Admin needs it in a Visitor management application, time, office and canteen maintains it on a biometric time and attendance device database. Data portability demands are for real.

Managing overlapping data across multiple applications is a huge burden for IT and admin teams. Imagine an organisation with multiple locations, employees, contract workers, departments –  using multiple applications for Payroll, TNA, Leave workflow, canteen management, visitor management, corporate travel desk, Asset tracking. Every application needs updated data for Employees, workflows, assets, inventories etc.

It’s nothing short of a nightmare to update employee, vendor, customer data across all applications.
Having data entry operators to update data in every application is highly inefficient, duplication of effort, unreliable and a never ending thankless job. Our systems and applications should be designed with Data portability – the ability to reuse data. This can be a game changer for enterprise applications.

Imagine, what if the city water supply decided that the water distribution system will support only plastic taps with 20 mm inlet.
